It is funny to me that even though I am a health coach, sometimes I still forget to take care of myself.
Take this past week for example. My husband and I recently bought a house and had been working non-stop, literally, to get it ready for us to move into this past weekend. We had to tear down wallpaper, paint the whole house, put in carpet, redo the kitchen and more.
My eating schedule was thrown off. I was not getting enough sleep. I called pizza delivery a couple of times and my exercise routine was ignored. I could easily tell that my engine was starting to run on empty.
This set back reminded me of the importance of proper self-care. In order for us to take good care of ourselves, we need to establish an overall routine of getting adequate rest, eating food that nourishes our bodies, and appropriate movement for our body type.
Always remember this: "Put on YOUR oxygen mask first, then assist someone else."
If we are always focused on everyone else's needs and the tasks that need to get done, and don't pay attention to taking care of our ourselves, we will end up trying to pour water from an empty pitcher. And, of course, you can't pour water from an empty pitcher! Hello? It's empty! Don't let your pitcher become empty!
Since we don't always have time to do all of the things necessary to keep our bodies running optimally, it is important to have at least ONE ultimate self-care strategy that you can turn to, even when you already feel like you are running on empty. I had my wake up call last week when I was so tired I found myself putting the butter in the pantry instead of the fridge.
I am happy to share my TOP THREE self-care solutions…praying, cooking and exercising!
Without God, I am nothing, and without my kitchen, I'd rather be dead. Well, not that extreme, but that is how much I love cooking!
Prayer is so important to me. When I feel overwhelmed, stressed, sad, tired, whatever, I pray to God. When I am happy, grateful, excited or just overall in a good mood, I pray to God. No matter where I am or what is going on, I can take a few minutes to pray and it always rejuvenates me.
When I am home and I need a lift, I get into the kitchen to cook something that is going to nourish my body. I love making well-balanced meals that fuel me, keep me well and make me feel great. I love green vegetables like kale and broccoli. I prepare whole grains like brown rice and quinoa. I know I am caring for myself when I give my body what it needs.
In addition to these two, I also love moving my body.
Working out or just getting up and moving, immediately energizes me and helps me become more focused. You know when your head feels foggy and tired where you just can't think straight? Try doing fifteen minutes of HIIT training, high intensity interval training.
Yes! You can get a great workout in just 15 minutes!
Do something like running, jumping rope, jumping jacks, climbing the stairs or whatever you're comfortable doing for 30 seconds to one minute as fast as you can! Then cool down for the same amount of time. So if you went for 45 seconds, rest for 45 seconds. Do this a total of three times, then rest for two full minutes. Walk around, shake out your muscles, keep moving during your cool down; don't sit down. Then repeat this same sequence two more times. You will have exercised for a minimum of 15 minutes by following this routine and you will feel AMAZING after and you will burn a TON of calories!!! Give it a try, especially if you find you have trouble getting a work out in. You do not need to work out for an hour or longer to see results!
