Water: For Health, Healing and Life!

Let me ask you two questions…

1. Would you ever stop giving water to your dog or cat?

2. Would you knowingly not water your plants?

If you are any sort of caring human being than your response to both of these questions should be, “NO!” We would never stop giving water to our pets or to our plants because we know they would not survive for very long without it. I have accidentally forgotten to water my plants before and, guess what? They died, and they died very quickly. So if we know our animals need water, and we know a plant dies without water or even too little water, why do people not pay attention to the amount of water they are drinking when it is essential to our survival?

It should be plain old common sense.

Increasing your water consumption is the first step to take if you want to improve any area of your health. In fact, this is so important it is the first thing I focus on with my coaching clients. Even if they tell me, “Oh yes, I consume a lot of water,” I still have them record for a day or two their water intake. I have yet to come across someone who drinks the recommended amount.

This is something I would challenge each of you to do too, record what your water consumption is for at least one day. You may want to use a water bottle that has the ounces marked along the side so you can be exact and, only record your consumption of plain water. Not juice, not coffee or tea, not even water with lemon: just plain water!

If you are not drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day, it’s time to increase your intake. Try setting yourself a water schedule to follow to help you reach this goal.

An example would be like this:

  • Before breakfast: drink 16 ounces 
  • After breakfast: drink 8 ounces 
  • Before lunch: drink 16 ounces 
  • After lunch: drink 8 ounces 
  • Before dinner: drink 16 ounces 
  • Total: 64 ounces

Here are some of the things I have heard from people over the years in studying nutrition and working with clients on the results people received after increasing their water intake:

  • Healthier skin and hair
  • Insomnia is gone 
  • No more joint pain
  • Muscle tone is better 
  • Signs of Lupus and Fibromyalgia disappeared 
  • Back pain was eliminated 
  • Chronic sinusitis cleared up 
  • Arthritis pain is gone 
  • Dropped 20 pounds in 4 months 
  • Gained energy 
  • Allergies improved 
  • Mood is better 
  • And more!

In many cases, increasing water consumption to at least 64 ounces a day will help to reduce or in some cases eliminate many of the symptoms people go to the doctor for. It is very sad to me that most doctors just cover up the symptoms with a pill rather than look for the actual cause, especially because in many cases water will help.

I worked in a family practice clinic for over a year and it was crazy to me how much coffee and diet soda I saw all of the doctors drinking. I usually got made fun of, by the doctors, for carrying around my big 64 ounce jug. “Geez, Randi, are you thirsty?” “Well yes, I am actually.” And you probably are too!

Please don’t misunderstand me; I am not saying doctors or anyone else for that matter cannot drink the occasional coffee or diet soda. What I am saying is that what we drink most of the time for most of the day needs to be water. This single step alone can help reduce pain, arthritis, high blood pressure, colitis, asthma, allergies, headaches and more! It is also a great way to curb cravings and control hunger. The next time you feel hungry at a random time of day, drink 8 ounces of water and wait 15 minutes. Then see if you are still hungry. Chances are you won’t be!

If you are someone who already drinks at least 64 ounces of water a day, try following this rule from Dr. Batmanghelidj, author of “Your Body’s Many Cries for Water:” for every two pounds of body weight, drink one ounce of water plus one and one half additional ounces of water for every ounce of caffeinated beverage you consume.

  1. Hi Randi, drinking water is so essential to our bodies. I cannot even imagine any more going without. I tried to look you up on twitter, but couldn’t find you. It said your name could not be found..maybe I did something wrong, but I tried a few possibilities…I would love to connect on twitter with you!

  2. Love this! It’s so funny how often I forget to drink water–much more often then I forget to eat 😉 LOVE your idea of making a routine out of the 16oz and 8oz before/after meals! That makes drinking more water possible for me–I am TOTALLY a routine person 😉
