When I started studying nutrition over a year ago, I wanted to learn exactly how food plays a role in our body and how people can allow food to become their medicine to heal. While food is a HUGE part of the equation to the solution of optimal health, what I discovered to be even more impactful in our health is a concept I learned at my school, The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, known as Primary Food™.
Our Primary Food™ consists of our relationships, career, spirituality and physical activity. It took me awhile to understand but I now believe that if our life is out of balance in any of these areas, it will have more of an impact on our overall health than just what we put into our bodies. I will tell you a personal story to demonstrate the power of Primary Food™.
In May of 2008, I started working as a sales rep for a company that worked with hospitals, clinics and private medical practices to place qualified medical personnel in their organizations. I was excited about this opportunity because the company was just starting this branch in the medical field, and with my natural entrepreneur spirit, I jumped at the chance to help this business grow. Ultimately, I wanted to make a difference in this company. It wasn’t long after I started that I discovered several instances that made me question the integrity of the company. I noticed several things that I found unethical and while I never participated in any such actions, it really began to wear on me, and fast. Within just a few months, I started experiencing stress like never before. Needless to say, my body didn’t like it. Soon I was having episodes of panic attacks and one day, I passed out while I was in the shower. Of course, I immediately saw a doctor and a bunch of heart tests were ordered. My doctor put me on anxiety medication and Prilosec because I was also experiencing a lot of digestive issues all of a sudden. After a couple of more fainting episodes, my doctor told me I couldn’t drive and being in a sales position, my company didn’t like this because they needed me in the field. Next thing I knew, I was being let go (great company, let me tell you). But the moment I was let go, a weight was lifted off of me like nothing I had ever experienced. I was thrilled and my fainting episodes stopped. With the assistance of my doctor, I was able to wean myself off of my anxiety medications and didn’t have a need for Prilosec anymore.
Why am I telling you this? Because my body didn’t need to take anxiety medications or antacids and I didn’t need to have my heart tested. What I needed was to leave a very stressful situation, which thankfully, God intervened and made that happen for me, and I was immediately fine! If I had remained in that situation, knowing what I know now, I am certain I would have ended up with a whole slew of health issues.
I challenge you to look at each of your Primary Foods™: relationships; career; spirituality; and physical activity.
For each of these areas of your life ask yourself these 3 questions:
1. How is this going for me?
2. What would I like to see different in this area of my life?
3. What is one thing I could be doing in this area of my life that I am not currently doing?
These questions will help bring awareness to what areas of your life need attention. Remember, we could eat all the vegetables in the world, but if we are out of balance in any of these areas, we will never have optimal health.
