How many people do you know who regularly use a prescription drug?
Are you a "drug" user?
Don't get me wrong, there is a place for prescription drugs in modern medicine. The problem is, we have become completely dependent on pharmaceuticals and put our health in the hands of this powerful industry.
According to statehealthfacts.org, the total number of retail prescription drugs filled at pharmacies in 2010 was over 3 BILLION for a total of $220 BILLON dollars in retail sales. That is astounding!
You may be wondering why this is a problem. I mean, pharmaceuticals help people, right?
Here are some things to consider and then you can decide.
Melody Peterson, author of Our Daily Meds, estimates that 100,000 Americans die each year from the side effects of their prescription drugs. This number is from side effects alone. It does not include deaths that occurred because the doctor made a mistake, the pharmacist filled the wrong drug, or the patient took too much. No, this is just the number of deaths from people taking drugs just as their doctor directed.
Pretty scary stuff, right?
Additionally, there is escalating evidence that the use of antibiotics, which are one of the ten most prescribed types of drugs in America, "play a leading role in the development of conditions such as colitis, food intolerances, behavioral problems, and joint conditions such as ankylosing spondolitis and rheumatoid arthritis" (1).
So something I took to help clear up one problem may actually be the cause of another? Yes.
The biggest problem, I feel, with having such a strong dependency on prescription medications is that they do not treat the disease and illness that is present, they just suppress the symptoms.
When a drug is used to eliminate the symptoms, the illness is merely managed, not cured. On top of that, by removing all outward signs of the disease, the drug "drives the illness to a deeper state in the body. [For example], that's why one ear infection [can turn into] a second and third, followed by gastrointestinal pain, food intolerances, constipation, rectal bleeding, and finally a fissure and abscess" (1).
What other choice do I have?
You CAN choose a different path other than pharmaceuticals…they do not have to be the answer to everything! It starts with putting your health in safe hands; your hands.
Just as tens of thousands of other Americans have stepped up to take control of their health, so can you!
Steps you can take to control your health starting NOW!
#1 Eat mostly whole, fresh, real food, which is food that hasn't been processed, created by scientists, assembled out of artificial flavor or preservatives and does not come from heavy advertising. This will provide the necessary nutrients your body needs to build its' immune system and manage and prevent disease.
#2 Exercise. If you want to live a longer, healthier life nothing beats exercise – even low amounts of exercise. Shoot for at least 15 minutes day.
#3 Take a day of rest. The body was made to work for six days and rest for one. Without regular rest the body becomes overworked and beat down which can open the flood gates for illness and disease.
#4 Increase vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is essential for optimal immune function. Low vitamin D levels are associated with a higher risk of illnesses like cold and flu.
#5 Drink mostly water and stay away from sugary drinks like juice and sodas.
#6 Next time you need to go to the doctor, seek out a naturopathic doctor or other practitioner that focuses on homeopathic remedies.
#7 Equip yourself to take care of daily symptoms, common ailments and the cold and flu with natural remedies like those with essential oils.
